- Depth of Field, The Distance from the centre of focus to which the foreground and background are still in focus, outside this distance the background and foreground begin to go out of focus. This depends on the lens aperture used, narrow depth of field is often used in portrait photography to soften the background. Landscape / scenic images would typically use a wide/large depth of field.
